Matt Webb begins his fifth season at Southeastern Louisiana and his third as the Lions’ defensive coordinator.

Webb, who serves as Southeastern’s recruiting coordinator, guided a defense in 2008 that led the Southland Conference in turnover margin and pass efficiency and third in pass defense.

Five players earned All-Southland Conference honors in 2008, led by first-team defensive back Tommy Connors, who was also selected to three FCS All-America squads after finishing among the top tacklers in the league while pacing the conference with four interceptions.

Under Webb’s tutelege, Connors and Mark Newbill became the first tandem since football was re-instated to record 100 tackles in a season.

Webb spent the 2005 season coaching the defensive line before taking over the linebacking corps the following season. After being promoted to defensive coordinator by head coach Mike Lucas, Webb inherited a defense that produced five all-conference picks in 2006, including Connors who was a second-team selection as a freshman.

In 2005, Webb oversaw a Lions’ defensive front four that helped form the nucleus of one of the top defensive units in the Southland Conference.

Under Webb’s guidance, his front line allowed only 146 yards rushing per game and ranked third in the SLC in that category. Following the season, two of his players, Rudy Johnson and Derrick Mincey earned all-conference notice while Steven Smith was an all-academic SLC pick.

Webb has played a tremendous role in spearheading the recruiting efforts at Southeastern where his classes have been regarded by some publications as some of the best in Louisiana and in the Football Championship Subdivision (formally Division I-AA).

Webb was instrumental in the 2006 signing class that inked 32 players including the No. 1 ranked I-AA prospect at wide receiver.

Webb joined the Lions in January of 2005 as defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator and immediately hit the ground running helping put together a solid recruiting class just weeks before signing day. The Lions inked 17 players on signing day.

Prior to coming to Southeastern, Webb served as linebackers coach (2000) and defensive line coach (2001-2004) at Southeast Missouri State University as well as recruiting coordinator.

During his tenure, Webb was a part of a significant turnaround at SEMO, helping the team to its first eight-win season since 1967 and to the conference championship game a year later.

From 1997-2000, Webb served as an assistant coach at Southwest Baptist University under Dennis Roland before reuniting in 2005 when Roland was named head coach at Southeastern. Much like his time at SEMO, Webb worked with both the linebackers and defensive line while handling the recruiting coordinator duties.

Along with his coaching experiences, Webb has also coordinated numerous summer football camps and tournaments as well as teaching instructional classes on coaching football during his time at Southeast Missouri.

Originally from Maryville, Mo., Webb earned his bachelor’s degree in communication at William Jewell College where he was a three-time all-conference linebacker and team MVP as a senior.

Webb earned his master’s degree from Southwest Baptist University and is married to the former Amy Claxton. They are the parents of a daughter, Maggie Jeanne (3).
