Soccer Falls to Texas State, 1-0

Lady Lions drop another heartbreaker in SLC play

HAMMOND – Texas State's Erica Michaud broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 82nd minute, as Southeastern Louisiana fell 1-0 to the Bobcats in Southland Conference women's soccer action Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex.

For the third straight match to open Southland Conference play, Southeastern (6-4-1, 0-3 SLC) could not find the net despite having scoring opportunities, as the Lady Lions attempted 12 shots in the match. Texas State improved to 6-3-3 overall and 2-0-1 in SLC play.

“Tonight's match was very fast paced between two good teams,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “We're playing good soccer, unfortunately the results are not showing on the scoreboard. We had several clear chances tonight, but we continue to have trouble converting our opportunities into goals.”

Both teams had scoring chances, but neither could capitalize until Michaud broke the deadlock with just under nine minutes left in regulation. TSU forward Britney Curry penetrated to force Southeastern goalkeeper Lacey Bockhaus to approach her, allowing Michaud to get open for an easy score. Bockhaus finished with four saves in the loss for Southeastern.

Neither team could find the net in the opening half. Both teams had opportunities, as Texas State held an 8-5 shot advantage in the opening period, but neither the Lady Lions nor Lady Bobcats could find the net.

Southeastern had several chances to break the tie in the second half. Southeastern senior forward Kristin McDonald had three shots in the final period, with one sailing wide, one going high and one being saved by TSU goalkeeper Mandy Mawyer. Junior Candice Wallace, junior Dana Mayer, sophomore Natalie Santana and sophomore Nicole Brannigan all had shots either saved or blocked in the second half. Mayer, Santana, sophomore Brittany Prieto, freshman Brittany Flores and freshman Kyle MacIntosh all had near misses in the opening half.

Southeastern will be back in action on Sunday, facing UTSA on Sunday at 1 p.m. in San Antonio, Texas
