HAMMOND - Four Lady Lions hit .200 or better and junior right side hitter Jessica Srajer posted ten kills, but it wasn't enough to overcome a hot-hitting McNeese State offense as the Southeastern Louisiana University women's volleyball team (5-8, 1-3 Southland Conference) dropped a 3-0 decision to the Cowgirls by scores of 19-25, 21-25, 22-25 on Friday night.
Southeastern got off to a fast start in the first set as Srajer hit .625 (5-0-8) and led a Lady Lion offensive attack that posted a .286 team hitting percentage (14-4-35) in the opening frame.
Unfortunately, after Souhteastern jumped out to a 10-7 lead, the McNeese State offense used a .433 team hitting percentage (16-3-30) to claim a 19-16 lead. The Lady Lions tried to battle back, but a 6-3 Cowgirl run gave McNeese a 25-19 win after one.
The Lady Lions tried to battle back in a hard-fought second set as senior middle blocker LaToya Anthony hit .667 (3-1-6) to lead Southeastern's offense as neither side could claim a lead larger than three until late. However, the Cowgirls once again were able to pull away for a 25-21 win.
Southeastern tried to rally in the third to stay alive and force a fourth set. On defense, the Lady Lions held the Cowgirls to just a .159 (12-5-44) hitting percentage while recording 22 digs and three team blocks. The Lady Lions put together a 5-0 run to take a 22-21 lead, however three of Southeastern's ten third-set attack errors and a McNeese State kill gave the Cowgirls a 25-22 win and a straight set victory.
The Lady Lions will return to action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. Southland Conference match at Stephen F. Austin.
