CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Southeastern Louisiana's
Matthew Carvell first two holes were a good indication of what was in store as the Lions opened their 2008-09 season Monday at the Aldila/Scenic City Intercollegiate at Council Fire Golf Course
Carvell opened the round with a birdie and followed that with an eagle on the second hole en route to a school-record 12-under-par 60 and a seven-shot lead after the first 18 holes. Carvell, who broke Jacque Chevallier's record of 64 set in the second round of the 1999 Deep South Invitational, carded a 2-under-70 in the second round, which was suspended due to thunderstorms in the area.
The remaining schools in the 16-team field will finish their round Tuesday morning before all squads complete the final round of the 54-hole tournament later in the day.
“I started out pretty well with the birdie on one and had a straight-away chip on two for eagle,” Carvell said. “It (the round) just kind of snow-balled from there. I just wanted to remain calm throughout the round and play each shot and not get too far ahead of myself.”
Carvell, who became the first player to shoot a 60 since Michael Schachner of Duke in 2006, eagled No. 2 and No. 6 and sank a 25-foot putt for his third eagle of the day. The senior, who has been Southeastern's medalist for the past three seasons, fired a 28 on the front nine before shooting a 32 on the back, ending the round with a long birdie putt on No. 17 before recording a birdie on No. 18.
“Today was definitely Matthew's day,” Southeastern head coach
Tim Baldwin said. “Hopefully, the team can come back with a solid round on Tuesday.”
Southeastern, which was tied with Furman for eighth-place, posted a team score of 288 after one round, 11 shots behind Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks held a one stroke lead over co-host Chattanooga with Augusta (Ga.) State, Wichita State and Western Carolina following.
North Florida was sixth in the standings at 284, followed by Southern Miss (285), Southeastern, Furman and Oklahoma (289) rounding out the top 10.
Aaron O'Callaghan fired a 3-over-par 75 for the Lions while
Cedric Scotto (76), junior college transfer
Patrick Solberg (77) and
Rasmus Astrand (78) rounded out Southeastern's five-man contingent. Senior
Graham Benson, competing as an individual, fired a 1-under 71 on the 6,999-yard course to finish in a tie for 25th place.
