HAMMOND – After a pair of top-five performances in its first two events, the Southeastern Louisiana University golf team will face its stiffest challenge of the 2009-10 season when it travels to Baton Rouge to begin play Monday at the David Toms Intercollegiate at The Country Club of Louisiana.
The Lions, ranked No. 47 in the latest Golfstat rankings and No. 49 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Peformance Index, will play 36 holes with an 8 a.m. shotgun start before playing the final 18 holes on Tuesday. Live scoring for the par 71, 6,849-yard tournament, will be available at www.LionSports.net
Southeastern, which concludes its fall schedule next week at the Carter Plantation Intercollegiate, will compete as part of a 14-team field that includes 10 teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 75.
The Lions will face a field highlighted by No. 27 Northwestern, No. 28 North Florida, No. 35 Kent State, No. 37 LSU, No. 44 Auburn, No. 54 Pepperdine, No. 56 Rice, No. 70 Ole Miss and No. 75 South Alabama. Also entered in the tournament are Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Mississippi State and UAB.
Cedric Scotto, who claimed medalist honors earlier this month at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic, has paced the Lions through the first two events with a 69.0 scoring average. The junior will be joined by newcomers Alvaro Arizabaleta, Horacio Leon and Tommy Sikes.
Rounding out the Lions’ five-man lineup is returning senior James Taverner, who will make his 2009-10 debut after missing the entire 2008-09 campaign. Freshman Rhys West will also make his Southeastern debut as he competes individually.
