LAFAYETTE – Southeastern Louisiana freshman Nina Schmied earned the Flight B Singles consolation title, as the Lady Lion women’s tennis team opened its fall season with a solid performance at the UL Invitational, hosted by Louisiana-Lafayette this past weekend.
Southeastern was part of a talented field that included fellow Southland Conference members Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Northwestern State and Central Arkansas, as well as Louisiana-Lafayette, UNO, North Texas and Middle Tennessee State.
“Overall, I felt we competed pretty well in our first tournament,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes commented. “Nina had a tremendous performance this weekend and I was also very pleased with the efforts of Morgane Dadot.”
In her Southeastern debut, Schmied bounced back from an opening match loss to roll through the consolation bracket. Schmied defeated Middle Tennessee State’s Kristina Martic, 6-4, 6-4 and A&M-Corpus Christi’s Bianca Discordia, 4-6, 6-4, 10-8.
Southeastern sophomore Audrey Chelini, who was 14-7 as a freshman in singles play and earned 2009 second team All-Louisiana recognition, picked up her first singles win of the fall, as UNO’s Kozue Matsumoto retired after losing the first set, 6-4. Sophomore Annika Hanke was also victorious in her opening singles match, cruising past MTSU’s Alex Dachos, 6-1, 6-2.
Dadot and freshman Alexandra Lindhal were Southeastern’s top doubles performers at the tournament, advancing to the Flight B semifinals. The pair opened the tournament with an 8-1 win over Jordan and Lindsay Short of Central Arkansas, before advancing with an 8-5 victory over Leanne Mascall of A&M-Corpus Christi and Northwestern State’s Lauren Peters. Dadot and Lindhal were eliminated, 8-2, by the MTSU duo of Carla Nava and Yuiri Nomoto.
The Lady Lions will continue fall play when they compete in the UWF Invitational in Pensacola, Fla. The tournament runs from Oct. 23-25.
