HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University golf team closes out the fall portion of its 2009-10 schedule when it plays host to 12 schools in the seventh annual Carter Plantation Intercollegiate.

The two-day, 54-hole tournament tees off Monday at Carter Plantation, which will host the 2010 Southland Conference Championships from April 26-28.

Joining Southeastern in the field will six Southland Conference rivals (UT Arlington, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Central Arkansas, McNeese State and Nicholls State), along with in-state schools UNO, Louisiana-Lafayette, and Louisiana-Monroe, Rice, Arkansas State and Jacksonville State.

Southeastern, ranked No. 41 in the latest national rankings by GolfStat and Golfweek, begins play at 7:30 a.m. on the par-72, 7,104-yard course. The Lions will be paired with UTA and Rice in the first two rounds with the final round of the 54-hole event scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday

With three top-five finishes in its first three events, Southeastern looks to head into its spring schedule on a positive note. And with a strong field that features six schools in the top 100, the Lions will have a tough challenge in winning their fourth championship in the tournament’s history.

“It’s a good chance to see the depth of the schools in the Southland Conference as we get to host the conference championships in the spring,” Southeastern head coach Tim Baldwin said. “There are some very good teams coming in and it should be a great week for golf. We want to have a great week and build on the success we’ve had so far this season.”

Cedric Scotto, who has a pair of top-five finishes in his first three events, leads Southeastern in scoring average at 69.44 in nine rounds of play. Alvaro Arizabaleta (70.50), Horacio Leon (72.56), Tommy Sikes (74.78) and freshman Rhys West (72.00) round out the Lions’ five-man lineup.

Southeastern’s James Taverner, who won medalist honors in 2007, will play as an individual after making his 2009-10 debut last week at the LSU/David Toms Intercollegiate. He will be joined by teammates Rasmus Astrand and Patrick Solberg.
