HAMMOND – After helping Southeastern Louisiana to its first Southland Conference Tournament berth since 2002, Lady Lion junior libero
Alex Greer was named to All-Southland Conference Volleyball Teams in an announcement from the league office on Wednesday.
Greer, a Valrico, Fla. native, was named to the team as an honorable mention selection. The Lady Lion defensive specialist is the program's first All-Southland selection since Brittany Gaydos earned third team accolades in 2004.
“We're very pleased to see Alex receive this very well deserved recognition,” Southeastern head coach Julie Langford commented. “She has been a significant contributor to our defensive effort all season. Alex has put together a very consistent performance this year and we're excited to see her honored for her efforts.”
Greer led the team and ranked fourth in the Southland Conference with 4.15 digs per set. Her performance was even better in league play, as she averaged 4.56 digs per set versus Southland competition – also good for fourth in the league. She also is currently second on the team with 24 service aces.
For the year, Greer posted 20 matches with double-digit digs, including eight matches with 20-plus digs. Against A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 6, she finished with a season-high 33 digs and averaged 11.0 digs per set. She also had 28 digs versus Central Arkansas on Oct. 30.
Southland Conference regular season champion Central Arkansas – which is in its final year of transition to Division I and is not eligible for this week's conference tournament – took home four of the league's top honors after finishing with a perfect 16-0 league mark. UCA's Chloe Smith was named the league's Player of the Year for the second straight season, while teammates Cristin Curl (Libero of the Year) and Robyn Smith (Setter of the Year), along with coach Steven McRoberts (Coach of the Year), were also honored.
Lamar's Wendy Krell was named Freshman of the Year and Emma Ridley of A&M-Corpus Christi took home Newcomer of the Year honors. The All-Southland Conference teams are selected by the league's head coaches and sports information directors.
Greer and the Lady Lions will open Southland Conference Tournament play versus top-seeded Texas State on Friday in San Antonio, Texas. First serve is set for 11 a.m. and the match will be streamed live on www.Southland.org, where live stats will also be available.
