HAMMOND – After helping the Southeastern Louisiana women’s soccer team close out the regular season with a 4-0 victory over Lamar and clinch a second seed in the Southland Conference Tournament, senior defender
Dana Mayer and sophomore goalkeeper
Lacey Bockhaus received Player of the Week accolades from the Southland Conference in an announcement from the league office on Monday.
Mayer, a native of Toronto, Ont., was named the Defensive Player of the Week for the first time after helping Southeastern to a win with a strong performance in the defensive backfield that included an assist. Bockhaus earned her first Goalkeeper of the Week honor this season after finishing with four saves versus Lamar and recording her career-high 10th shutout of the season.
“This is an extremely well deserved honor for both Lacey and Dana,” Southeastern head coach
Blake Hornbuckle commented. “Lacey is a stalwart in goal for us and has been an imposing presence for our opponents to deal with all season long. After being very successful as a midfielder for three years, Dana selflessly made a seamless transition to the back, where she has been a key component of our foundation. Her accomplishments in her first year in the backfield are good indicators of her versatility.”
Mayer and Bockhaus have both been key parts of a dominant Southeastern defense, that ranks 10th in the nation in both scoring defense and shutout percentage. Mayer, along with fellow defenders Kyle MacIntosh, Nicole Brannigan and Brittany Prieto have helped the Lady Lions outscore opponents, 53-9, this season. Bockhaus is 13th in the nation with a 0.53 goals against average.
As one of the top two seeds in this week’s Southland Conference Tournament in Natchitoches, Mayer, Bockhaus and the Lady Lions will receive a first round bye. The Lady Lions will face the winner of Thursday’s first round match between Stephen F. Austin and McNeese State on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Should Southeastern get past the semifinal round, the Lady Lions will advance to Sunday’s 1 p.m. championship match with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
All of the tournament action will be streamed live for free at www.Southland.org. Sunday’s championship match will be televised live on the Southland Television Network (Charter Channel 22 in the Hammond area).
