BEAUMONT, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s tennis team came up just short, falling 4-2 to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a neutral site Southland Conference match at the Cardinal Courts on the Lamar campus Sunday afternoon.

The Lady Lions fell to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in Southland Conference play with the loss. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (8-11, 4-6 SLC) clinched a spot in the SLC Tournament, scheduled to begin next Friday in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Southeastern’s postseason fate comes down to Monday’s regular season finale at Stephen F. Austin, scheduled for 12 p.m. in Nacogdoches, Texas. The winner will earn the final SLC Tournament berth.

The two teams decided to forego doubles play. In singles, A&M-Corpus Christi took a 2-0 lead with a default win at No. 6 and a straight-set victory at No. 5, as the Lady Lions were playing with only five student-athletes.

Southeastern evened the match with wins at the top of the singles draw. At No. 1, senior Iva Velkovska improved her team-best dual match singles mark to 18-2 with a 7-6, 6-4 victory over Mirna Cicak. With the victory, Velkovska improved her career mark to 80-13 in singles play – three short of the school’s career victory record held by former Lady Lion Emilija Arnaudovska (83-11 from 2005-08).

At No. 2, Lady Lion freshman Audrey Chelini rolled past Nina Ciric 6-1, 6-2. Chelini improved to 14-6 overall with the singles victory.

The final two matches went to three sets. At No. 4, Alexandra Dyckman bounced back from a set down to outlast Southeastern junior Ashley Longoria, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. The Lady Islanders clinched the match at No. 3, where Lady Lion freshman Morgane Dadot was edged by Erika Iriarte 7-6, 5-7, 7-6.

The league office will release the tournament bracket upon the conclusion of the regular season on Monday.
