Southeastern To Suspend Men's Tennis Program
Main
Initial step in potential series of budget reductions
HAMMOND - As an initial step by Southeastern Louisiana University in what may potentially be a series of budget reduction measures, the university's Athletic Department has moved to suspend its men's tennis program. The suspension will take effect June 30, 2009, according to Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann.

The decision reduces the number of Division I intercollegiate sports offered by Southeastern to 15.

"Given reduced resources this was a difficult but necessary decision in order to maintain the strength and integrity of our remaining sport programs," said Erdmann.

The men's tennis team, under head coach Jason Hayes, included 10 student-athletes and an assistant coach. Hayes will remain as head coach of the women's tennis team after completing his eighth season in a dual role.

"Obviously this is not our preference. However, considering the magnitude of the impending cuts there was no option," Erdmann said. "The reality of the cuts and their impact on the lives of student-athletes and athletic department personnel is definitely coming to light."

The department will honor all existing scholarship agreements and will grant full eligibility releases to any other institution that seeks those men's tennis student-athletes who wish to transfer. NCAA guidelines allow student-athletes who decide to transfer to be immediately eligible for financial aid, practice and competition provided they meet eligibility requirements.
