FRISCO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore Julien Roussel was named to the Capital One/Southland Conference Men’s Tennis All-Academic Team on Wednesday, the league office announced.

Roussel, a business administration major with a 3.33 grade point average, was one of six student-athletes selected to the team. UTSA’s Andre Moreira led the team and was selected the Capital One/SLC Men’s Tennis Student-Athlete of the Year.

Roussel was a solid performer in both singles and doubles play for the Lions, who advanced to the SLC Tournament semifinals last month. Playing predominantly at the No. 2 position in the singles draw, Roussel posted an 8-6 record in dual match play, winning his first four matches of the spring before suffering an injury that kept him out for nearly a month. In his two years with Southeastern, the native of France posted a 27-14 singles mark.

In doubles play, he and freshman Damien Cordoba teamed for a 5-2 doubles mark at the No. 3 position. The pair was 3-1 versus Southland Conference competition and earned second team All-SLC accolades.

Roussel and Moreira were joined on the All-Academic Team by UT Arlington’s Brieuc Hamon, A&M-Corpus Christi’s Laurent Montoisy, Daniel Moreiras of UTSA and SLC Player of the Year Aswin Vijayaragavan of Texas-Pan American.

The Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 12 member schools, voted for the student-athlete of the year. The student-athlete of the year award is presented to the one male and one female student-athlete who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated achievement in athletics for at least two years at the nominating institution.

The all-academic teams are voted on by the head coaches, sports information directors and academic/compliance administrators from each Southland university. Student-athletes must possess a 3.0 cumulative GPA, have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution and participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competition to qualify for the all-academic squad. Student-athletes earn automatic qualification onto the Southland Conference All-Academic Team if they maintain a GPA of 3.0 and were also named first-team All-Southland Conference and/or the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine All-Academic District VI At Large team.
