FRISCO, Texas – After setting a school-record in Southeastern Louisiana’s non-conference game at South Dakota, senior kicker
Jeff Turner was named the Southland Conference Co-Special Teams Player of the Week in a release by the league on Monday.
Turner, who earned Southland weekly honors for the third time in his career, kicked two field goals and added an extra point in the Lions’ loss at USD. Turner gave Southeastern a 3-0 lead in the first quarter when he connected on a school-record 52-yard field goal, eclipsing the previous record of 50 set by Roy Hurd against Louisiana-Lafayette in 1969.
The native of Houston, Texas, who is Southeastern’s all-time leading scorer with 221 points, added a 20-yard boot and an extra point in the second quarter as the Lions trailed 14-13 at halftime.
Mark Newbill was named to the Southland Conference Honor Roll on defense after posting a season-high 15 tackles – the most by a Lion this season – with a sack.
Southeastern (2-2) returns to action on Oct. 10 when it opens Southland Conference play in a 2 p.m. contest at Texas State.
