HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women’s tennis team opened its 2010 campaign with a strong effort, defeating Alcorn State, 7-0, in non-conference action Sunday afternoon at the Oak Knoll Country Club.

The Lady Lions (1-0) won all six singles matches in straight sets after taking two of three doubles matches. All eight players on the Southeastern roster saw action and helped the Lady Lions drop Alcorn State to 0-1 overall. Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes was happy with the efforts of his young team that features four sophomores and four freshmen.

“We’re very pleased to get off to a good start with a win against a talented Alcorn State team,” Hayes commented. “It was good to see everyone get to play and play a part in this victory. We have five players on our team playing their first Division I match and I felt they performed well.”

Southeastern took the early lead with win at the top two positions in the doubles draw. At No. 1, Lady Lion sophomores Audrey Chelini and Morgane Dadot got past Arielle Buchman and Kati Hoepelman, 8-4. The Lady Lions closed out double play with an 8-1 victory by freshmen Nina Schmied and Camille Pilon over Alcorn’s Nancy Gonzales and Kalanina Sandoval at No. 2.

Freshman Isabel Brito gave Southeastern a 2-0 lead with an impressive 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 5 over Alcorn’s Dasha Rud. Chelini made it 3-0 shortly thereafter, powering past Buchman, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1.

At No. 6, freshman Alexandra Lindahl clinched the match for the Lady Lions, defeating Tatiana Moreno, 7-5, 6-0. Sophomore Annika Hanke pushed the lead to 5-0 at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-0, over Nancy Gonzales.

Schmied and Dadot completed the sweep of singles play. At No. 2, Schmeid was too much for Claudia Gonzales, taking a 6-2, 6-3 win. Dadot clinched the shutout with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Hoepelman at No. 3.

The Lady Lions will return to action on Saturday, facing Tulane at 1 p.m. in New Orleans.
