HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will return to the court after a week off on Saturday, facing Southland Conference foe Nicholls in Stopher Gymnasium.
Tip-off of the contest between the Lady Lions (9-13, 3-6 Southland) and Colonels (4-18, 1-9 Southland) is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday's game will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the Internet at www.LionSports.net. Southeastern will be looking to snap a two-game skid. Last Saturday, the Lady Lions dropped a 61-49 decision to UTSA. Senior post
Zevy Ivory posted her second double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points and 10 rebounds, but was the only Lady Lion in double figures.
Southeastern is averaging 61.7 points and 12.2 assists per game. Junior forward
Rashima Jenkins leads the team with 9.2 points per game, followed by sophomore guard
Kelli Jenkins (8.5 ppg), Ivory (8.1 ppg), senior guard
Kim Edmonson (7.5 ppg), junior guard
Chelsea Hix (6.3 ppg) and freshman guard
Erica Burgess (6.2 ppg).
Kelli Jenkins leads the team with 3.8 assists per contest.
The Lady Lions have netted 126 three-point field goals on the season. Hix leads the team with 35 treys, while Edmonson has connected on 34 from behind the arc. Hix is currently fourth on the program's career list with 102 three-point field goals, while Edmonson sits in eighth with 87 triples.
Southeastern has outrebounded opponents by an average of 2.5 rebounds per game. Ivory leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per contest, followed by
Rashima Jenkins with 5.8 per contest. Ivory, a native of Shreveport, needs 18 rebounds to become the 14th student-athlete in school history to reach 500 career rebounds.
Defensively, the Lady Lions are holding opponents to 63.7 points per game and are forcing 18.5 turnovers per outing. Ivory leads the team with 20 blocked shots, followed by junior center
Kasia Gawor with 15 swats. Ivory is currently fifth in school history with 77 career blocked shots. Burgess leads the team with just over a steal per game, while
Kelli Jenkins is averaging 1.0 steal per contest.
The Lady Lions will be looking to complete a season sweep versus Nicholls. Back on Jan. 30, Southeastern defeated the Colonels, 60-49 in Hammond. Sophomore guard
Amber Crenshaw scored a career-high 14 points for the Lady Lions, while Ivory posted a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds) and Hix chipped in 10 points. Junior guard Ricshanda Bickham and freshman forward Alisha Allen had 16 points apiece for the Colonels, who were victimized by 26 turnovers.
Bickhman and Allen are the top scorers for the Colonels, who are coming off a tough 65-63 road loss at Sam Houston State on Wednesday. Bickham leads the team with 17.9 points per game, while Allen is averaging 14.7 points per contest to make up most of the team's 55.4 point per game average. Bickham also leads the team with 34 three-point field goals and 3.5 assists per contest.
Allen is the Colonels' top rebounder, averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. Junior forward Cassie Hearon averages 5.6 boards per contest for NSU, but the team has a minus-4.1 rebounding margin.
Defensively, Nicholls allows 67.9 points per game on average. Bickham is among the national leaders with 3.5 steals per contest. Allen is the team's top shot blocker with 12 blocks to her credit on the year.
Southeastern is now 52-12 all-time versus Nicholls. Southeastern has won the last four meetings dating back to a 60-55 loss in Thibodaux in the 2007-08 season.
Following Saturday's game, Southeastern will return home on Wednesday to host UT Arlington at 7 p.m. Burgess will be next Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Memphis native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE (Positive Role-models Involved in the Development of Excellence).
