Lady Lions Set to Host Southland Foe A&M-Corpus Christi

Tip-off is set for Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The first 150 fans willl receive a trading card featuring junior Kasia Gawor.
HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana women's basketball team will look to improve its postseason chances on Wednesday, when it hosts Southland Conference rival Texas A&M-Corpus Christi at 7 p.m. in the University Center.

With Southland East Division co-leader Central Arkansas completing its transition from Division II and ineligible for postseason play, the Lady Lions (10-15, 4-8 Southland) are currently sitting in the eighth and final spot in the Southland Conference Tournament. A win over the Islanders (17-8, 9-3 Southland) in Wednesday's game, which will be broadcast on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net, would greatly improve Southeastern's chances to advance to the league tournament, which runs March 9-12 in Katy, Texas.

With four regular season games remaining, the Lady Lions have a two-game lead for that last spot over McNeese State and Texas State. A&M-Corpus Christi, meanwhile, is trying to keep pace with Southland West Division leader Lamar, who sits a game ahead of the Islanders in the league standings.

Lady Lion junior center Kasia Gawor will be Wednesday's Spotlight Player of the Game and heads into the contest second on the team with 15 blocked shots. The first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Krakow, Poland native courtesy of the Southeastern PRIDE (Positive Role-models Involved in the Development of Excellence).

The Lady Lions will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's 85-60 loss at Stephen F. Austin. Southeastern junior forward Rashima Jenkins posted her fourth double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the Lady Lions could not overcome a 50 percent shooting performance by the Ladyjacks, who had four players in double figures.

Rashima Jenkins leads the Lady Lions in scoring, averaging 9.5 points per game. The Bossier City native is joined among the team's scoring leaders by senior forward Zevy Ivory (8.9 ppg), sophomore guard Kelli Jenkins (8.7 ppg), senior guard Kim Edmonson (7.5 ppg), sophomore guard Chelsea Hix (6.2 ppg) and freshman guard Erica Burgess (6.0 ppg). Kelli Jenkins leads the team with just under four assists per game and needs one assist to become the first Lady Lion with 100 assists in a season since 2001-02.

The Lady Lions are outrebounding opponents by an average of 2.3 boards per contest. Ivory leads the team with 6.7 rebounds per contest and became the 14th student-athlete in program history to reach 500 career rebounds. Rashima Jenkins is the team's other top rebounder, averaging 6.0 rebounds per game.

Southeastern are holding opponents to 65.2 points per game and forcing 18.6 turnovers per contest. Ivory leads the team with just under a blocked shot per game and her 77 career blocks rank her fourth in school history. Burgess leads the team with 34 steals, while Kelli Jenkins has 26 steals.

Ivory is not the only Lady Lion climbing the Southeastern career leader boards. Hix is currently third in school history with 106 three-point field goals in her career, while Edmonson's 93 treys rank her seventh in school history.

A&M-Corpus Christi comes to town having won three of its last four games. The Islanders defeated McNeese State at home, 72-62, on Saturday. Junior center Myeisha Myles led a balanced attack with 12 points, as 12 different Islanders scored in the victory. Senior center Elisa Beagle pulled down 13 rebounds and junior guard Jade Davis dished out six assists in the victory for TAMUCC.

Davis is the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.0 points per game, while junior forward Adrienne Scott has a 10.9 point per game average. Senior guard Shaye Montgomery is tied for third on the team in scoring with Beagle at 8.6 points per game and also leads the team with 3.3 assists per contest.

Behind Beagle and her team-high 8.2 rebounds per game, the Islanders are outrebounding foes by an average of 6.4 rebounds per game. Senior guard Deziree Green (6.8 rpg), Scott (6.3 rpg) and Myles (5.3 rpg) have also been effective on the glass.

Opponents are averaging 65.2 points per game against the Islanders, who are forcing 16.0 turnovers per contest. Beagle leads the team with 19 blocked shots on the year, followed closely by Myles with 16 blocks. Green is tops on the squad with 37 steals, while Montgomery has been credited with 26.

Southeastern is 2-2 all-time versus the Islanders, who joined the Southland Conference prior to the 2006-07 season. The Lady Lions have won the last two meetings, both of which were held in Corpus Christi. On their last trip to Hammond, the Islanders grinded out a 47-46 win over the Lady Lions in 2006-07. Last season, then-senior forward Kristy Carlin led four Lady Lions in double figures with 22 points, as Southeastern picked up a 76-72 overtime victory. In that win, the Lady Lions were able to overcome an electric 33-point performance by Davis.

Southeastern will close out its 2009-10 home schedule on Saturday, welcoming Central Arkansas to town for a 3 p.m. league contest. Prior to the game, Southeastern will honor Ivory and Edmonson in a special Senior Day ceremony. Ivory will also be Saturday's Spotlight Player of the Game and the first 150 fans will receive a trading card featuring the Shreveport native courtesy of the PRIDE. Saturday's game will be broadcast on the Internet only at www.LionSports.net, where live stats will also be available.
