Lauren Coniglio each drove in two runs in an eight-run Lady Lion fifth inning, as Southeastern rallied from five runs down to defeat Alcorn State, 10-6, in non-conference softball action Thursday night at North Oak Park.
Southeastern improved to 5-10 overall with the win. Alcorn State fell to 5-8 on the year.
“We're very proud of our team for not hanging our heads and coming back for the win,” Southeastern head coach
Pete Langlois commented. “We can't allow ourselves to get into those kind of holes against Southland Conference teams, but we showed some toughness battling back tonight.”
After a scoreless first inning, Alcorn State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Bianca Armstrong led off the frame with a single and Jasmine Hall followed with a mammoth home run over the left field fence off of Southeastern sophomore
Katelyn Thomason to put the Lady Braves on top.
Southeastern cut into the lead in the bottom of the second inning. Alcorn State starter Jennie Hatch hit sophomore
Meghan Gomez, who would later score on a throwing error by Christina Garcia to pull Southeastern within one, 2-1.
Alcorn padded its lead in the top of the third inning. Garcia drew a walk and then scored on a RBI double by Jasmine Hubbard. After Armstrong drew a walk, Hall deposited her second home run of the game over the left field fence to put Alcorn State up, 6-1.

Tamra Ladnier to cut the lead to 6-2.

Bailey Zievert (1-0) combined for 2.2 innings of shutout relief to keep Southeastern within striking distance heading into its half of the fifth.
Singles by Coniglio and Ladnier, as well as a Gomez walk loaded the bases with no outs. Morse then reached on a fielding error by Rachel Morris to allow Coniglio to score. Senior
Amber Freeman followed with a single up the middle to plate Gomez. Logan followed a ripped a double over Armstrong's head in left, allowing Morse and Ladnier to score and knot the score at 6.
After Alcorn State recorded the first out of the inning, Duhe plated two more runners with a single to left to give Southeastern its first lead. Coniglio then followed with a two-run double to put Southeastern up, 10-6. In total, the Lady Lions sent 12 batters to the plate in the fifth inning and collected seven hits.
Up by four, Langlois gave Thomason a second chance and the sophomore from Spring, Texas made the most of it. After giving up a leadoff single to Hubbard in the sixth, Thomason retired the game's final six batters to preserve Zievert's first win of the season.
The Lady Lions will be back in action on Saturday, facing South Alabama at 2 p.m. in Mobile, Ala.
