Box Score

HAMMOND – After losing the first two, Central Arkansas salvaged a victory to wrap-up a three-game series against No. 21 Southeastern Louisiana, winning 8-6 Sunday at Alumni Field. The loss put the Lions' overall record at 22-3, 7-2 in Southland Conference play.

The Lions jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, plating a run in each of the first two innings. In the bottom of the first, Justin Boudreaux scored on a wild pitch. Jeff Harkensee was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the second, allowing Trey Martin to score.

After UCA (8-16, 3-6 SLC) put up three runs in the third to take the lead, Southeastern tied the game in the fourth. Boudreaux had a sacrifice fly to plate Martin.

Central Arkansas proceeded to score five unanswered runs, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Southeastern rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Following a Cody Gougler lead-off single, Joe Sparacino doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Chad Gough-Fortenberry then grounded to short, which allowed Gougler advance 90 feet. Two batters later, Martin hit into an apparent double play ball, but pitcher Ethan McKinzie's throw to second was errant. Everyone was safe, including Sparacino at home. Cass Hargis proceeded to double through the left side, scoring Brock Hebert.

The recovery ended there, though, as Harkensee grounded into a double play to end the inning and leave the score at 8-6, the eventual final count, in favor of UCA.

Freshman starter Jordan Hymel (4-1) suffered his first defeat of the season, giving up four earned runs on six hits in four innings. He struck out one Bear and allowed three walks. Relief pitcher Evan Cox (1-4) earned the win for the visitors. Jeremy Brewer picked up his first save.

The Lions conclude a five-game home stand Tuesday when they host Tulane. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. Damon Sunde will have the call on the Southeastern Sports Radio Network, including KSLU-FM (90.9) in Hammond and online at www.LionSports.net.
