COVINGTON – In a match that featured four three-set singles matches, Sam Houston State battled past Southeastern Louisiana, 5-2, in women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Stone Creek Club and Spa.

Southeastern fell to 7-9 overall and 3-4 in league play with the hard fought loss. Sam Houston State (6-7, 5-1 Southland) swept doubles play and won four of six singles matches. Three of the Bearkats' four singles victories came in three sets and two were won when SHSU came from a set down.

“We had our chances today, but Sam Houston State kept fighting and wore us down,” Southeastern head coach Jason Hayes said. “Our girls learned a lesson today. When we have a chance to upset a good team like Sam Houston State and have them on the ropes,we have to put them away.”

SHSU took the lead with a strong performance in doubles play. At No. 3, Lady Lions sophomores Mia Hagiu and Annika Hanke were edged by Sheridan Currie and Cally Woerner. Convincing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 gave the Bearkats the early edge.

Southeastern evened the match early in singles play. At No. 1, sophomore Audrey Chelini (10-6) had a 5-3 lead in the first set when Federica Denti retired. SHSU got its second point of the match at No. 5, as Nadia Dubyanskaya defeated Lady Lion freshman Isabel Brito, 6-3, 6-2.

The remaining four matches were stretched to three sets with Southeastern coming out on top of only one. At No. 2, sophomore Morgane Dadot continued her stellar play, improving her singles mark to 13-2, defeating SHSU's Giorgia Pozzan, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.

Sam Houston State came from a set down to take wins at the middle spots in the singles draw. Freshman Camille Pilon saw Taiyana Postnikova rally for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 3. At No. 4, freshman Nina Schmied dropped a hard-fought 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 decision to Currie. SHSU closed out the match with a win at No. 6, as Woerner defeated Hagiu, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.
