HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team looks to equal a record last set in 1997 when it opens a three-game series Friday against Texas Southern at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
First pitch for Friday's opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by the series finale on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Friday and Sunday games will be broadcast in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net, where live statistics will be available for the entire series.
Southeastern (No. 29 Collegiate Baseball), off to its best start in school history, looks to go 10-0 for the first time while equaling its school record for most consecutive victories. The 1997 Lions were the last team to reach 10 straight wins and finished 34-24 overall.
In their current streak, the Lions have gotten solid hitting and strong pitching that included a three-game sweep at Mississippi State last weekend. As a team, the Lions are hitting .306 and have averaged 9.5 runs per game while reaching base at a .472 clip.
On the mound, the Lions have limited opponents to .239 at the plate while compiling a Southland Conference-best 2.73 team earned run average.
Newcomer
Jeff Harkensee leads Southeastern at the plate with a .486 batting average, second in the Southland Conference, while hitting two home runs with 11 RBI. The junior college transfer has hit a Southland Conference-leading six doubles on the season and leads the league with 12 runs scored.
Justin Boudreaux (.406-0-6) and freshman
Chad Gough-Fortenberry (.375-0-3) are next in hitting for the Lions followed by freshman
Brock Hebert (.308-0-13) and
Cody Gougler (.276-1-11).
Junior
Brandon Efferson (2-0, 3.75 ERA) will start in Friday's opener for Southeastern with senior
Ryan Boudreaux (1-0, 7.11 ERA) slated to pitch Saturday. The Lions' starter for Sunday is to be announced.
Texas Southern (5-6) opened its season dropping three games to Indiana State before winning four straight beginning with a doubleheader sweep of Jarvis Christian. The Tigers added wins against Jackson State and Mississippi Valley before dropping three of their next four games, including a 14-8 loss at Sam Houston State on Wednesday.
Ray Hernandez (.390-0-15) leads TSU at the plate followed by Corbin Smith (.344-0-6) and Terrel Jones (.286-1-10). As a team, the Tigers are hitting .290 and have stolen 15 bases on the season.
