LAFAYETTE – The Southeastern Louisiana University golf team prepares for another tough challenge as it opens play on Monday at the 25th annual Louisiana Classics at Oakbourne Country Club.
Action begins in the two-day, 15-team event at 8 a.m. with 36 holes before the final round that starts at 8 a.m. on Tuesday.
Southeastern, ranked No. 48 in the latest GolfStat national rankings, is one of four teams in the top 50 that includes No. Illinois, No. 24 SMU and No. 28 LSU. Also competing in the field is host Louisiana-Lafayette, Colorado, Houston, Kansas, Memphis, Southern Miss, Texas State, Tulsa, UAB, UALR and UNO.
Leading Southeastern's five-man lineup on the par 72, 7,141-yard course is freshman
Philipp Westermann, the reigning Southland Conference Golfer of the Month. Westermann has averaged 71.17 in his first two events of the spring with a pair of top-five finishes.
Also competing for the Lions is
Cedric Scotto, the 2009 Southland Conference Golfer of the Year, who is averaging 72.11. Freshman
Alvaro Arizabaleta (72.87) and seniors
James Taverner (74.56) and
Patrick Solberg (75.00) round out the lineup with freshman
Rhys West (74.67) competing as an individual.
