LAKE CHARLES – Southeastern Louisiana sophomore
Morgane Dadot and freshman
Isabel Brito earned singles victories, but it was not enough, as the Lady Lions dropped a 5-2 decision to McNeese State in Southland Conference women's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Lake Charles Recreational Courts.
Southeastern fell to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in Southland Conference play. McNeese State improved to 6-4 this spring with a 2-2 league mark.
Though disappointed by the loss, Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes was pleased with the effort his team exhibited on Sunday.
“It's tough to keep losing these tight matches, but we have to keep fighting,” Hayes commented. “I keep telling the team that good things only come to the teams that keep fighting. We know our best tennis is ahead of us and that knowledge keeps us fighting and working hard. There's no quit in any of our players and because of that we expect to surprise some opponents as the season continues.”
McNeese State took the doubles point by taking the bottom two matches of the doubles draw. At No. 1, sophomores
Audrey Chelini and Dadot defeated the McNeese team of Ralista Pirdopska and Victoria Martinez, 8-5. However, the Cowgirls emerged victorious at No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, Dadot, a Reunion, France native continued her dominant play, improving her team-best singles mark to 8-1 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Petra Gudelj at No. 4. At No. 5, Brito rallied for her second singles win of the spring, outlasting Maria Frausto, 0-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Lady Lion freshman
Camille Pilon had her three-match singles win streak snapped at No. 3, losing 6-3, 5-7, 10-3. McNeese State earned straight set wins at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 to secure the victory.
Southeastern will return to action on Thursday, playing its first home match in more than a month. The Lady Lions will host Butler in a 2 p.m. non-conference match at North Cypress Fitness Club.
