HAMMOND – Joe Sparacino went 2-for-3 with a home run and double while driving in a career-high six runs as No. 23-ranked Southeastern Louisiana continued its season-high eight-game homestand with a 17-3 win over Alcorn State on Tuesday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Southeastern (27-7) will return to action on Wednesday when it plays host to Alabama in a 7 p.m. contest. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net. The game will also be televised on a tape-delayed basis on the Southeastern Channel (Charter Cable 18 in Tangipahoa, St. Tammany and Livingston Parishes and Channel 17 in Washington Parish).
After the Lions were retired in order in the first, Sparacino gave Southeastern a 2-0 lead when he drilled a 2-and-1 pitch from Alcorn State's Troy Williams (1-4) over the right-field wall for his fourth home run of the season. The Lions added a run in the inning on a single by freshman
Chad Gough-Fortenberry before adding a run in the third and five in the fourth.
Gough-Fortenberry, who went 2-for-2 with two RBI, reached safely on a bunt up the first-base line that allowed
Trey Martin to score to give the Lions a 5-0 lead.
Cass Hargis added an RBI double before Sparacino would later clear the bases with a double down the right-field line.
Josh Janway (3-0) pitched four innings and fanned six to earn the win in his first start of the season. The sophomore scattered seven hits and got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third inning as he fanned Eduardo Gonzalez and got Rodney Warren to fly out into a 9-2 double play.
Southeastern put the game away with a seven-run, seventh inning as it sent 12 men to the plate and capitalized on an error, a walk and two hit batters to build a 16-1 lead.
Josh Cryer and
Torin Lucas each collected two hits - the only hits in the frame for the Lions - with an RBI.
Kenny Rowan went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Alcorn State (15-17) while Warren helped the Braves avert a shutout with a solo home run in the fifth inning.
