BEAUMONT, Texas – Freshman
Jordan Hymel allowed two hits through six innings on the mound and No. 21 Southeastern Louisiana used a three-run second inning to pull away and defeat Lamar, 5-1, to salvage a three-game series on Saturday at Vincent-Beck Stadium.
Chris Franklin went 3-for-4 at the plate while
Cass Hargis went 2-for-5 with an RBI as Southeastern (24-5, 8-4 SLC) built a 4-0 lead and avoided a three-game sweep.
Josh Janway pitched the final three innings to earn his fifth save of the season.
Hymel (5-1) fanned two batters and allowed a solo home run to Ryan Meade in the second inning in earning his first win in Southland Conference play. The southpaw allowed one base runner over his final three innings before giving way to Janway in the seventh.
Southeastern took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when
Josh Cryer singled up the middle to score
Justin Boudreaux. The Lions loaded the bases in the second inning off Lamar starter Jonathan Dziedzic (1-2) as Franklin led off with a single,
Philip Freeman drew a walk and
Brock Hebert hit a bunt single up the third base line.
Trey Martin then followed with a single to right to drive in Franklin to give Southeastern a 2-0 lead. Freeman scored on the following play when Hargis reached on an error and Hebert gave the Lions a 4-0 lead when he scored on a fielder's choice by
Jeff Harkensee.
After Lamar cut the lead to 4-1 on Meade's second home run of the year, the Lions added an insurance run in the third inning when
Cody Gougler led off with a walk, moved to second on a single by Franklin, moved to third on a ground out and scored on Hebert's grounder to second.
Joey Latuilippe went 2-for-3 to lead Lamar. Dziedzic pitched six innings for the Cardinals, scattering eight hits and striking out five.
Southeastern will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Mobile, Ala., to face South Alabama in a 6 p.m. contest at Stanky Field. The game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9) and on the internet at www.LionSports.net.
