HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana junior infielder
Katie Duhe was named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA)/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Softball Teams in an announcement from the CoSIDA office on Wednesday.
Duhe, a Lutcher native, currently has a 4.0 grade point average and is majoring in accounting. A second team selection, Duhe is the third student-athlete in the history of the Southeastern softball program to earn Academic All-America honors, joining Southeastern Hall of Famer Tara Maus (1991 and 1992) and former Lady Lion Brooke Lockhart (2008).
Overall, Duhe is the 12th Academic All-American in school history. Duhe joins previous Southeastern Academic All-America honorees Steve Grigas (men's basketball, 1979), Mikael Jonsson (men's tennis, 1989), Haken Bennhage (men's tennis, 1990), Fjellstrom (1990 and 1991), Renata Smekalova (1994), Janice Ezegbunam (women's track and field, 2004), Brett Bergeron (men's golf, 2006), Nina Knavs (women's tennis, 2008), Vladimir Paunic (men's tennis, 2008), Lockhart and Maus.
Duhe was the only representative on the Academic All-America team from a Southland Conference school or a Louisiana school. In all, Duhe was one of six players selected from District VI, which encompasses all of the schools in the states of Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. She was also one of five student-athletes on the team that was not either a senior or graduate student.
The honor is just the latest in a slew of Academic honors for Duhe. In her three seasons with the Lady Lions, she has twice been named first team CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Distict VI and was a first team All-Southland Conference Academic selection in 2009.
In 2010, Duhe split time between second base and shortstop, earning a second team All-Southland selection as a utility player. Fourth in the Southland with a team-high .363 batting average, Duhe finished the regular season ranked among the league leaders in multiple categories including slugging percentage (.556, 8th), on-base percentage (.416, 11th), hits per game (1.00, 13th) and fewest strikeouts per game (0.18, 2nd). Duhe also led the team with 23 runs batted in and seven doubles, while finishing tied for second with five home runs. In her three years with the program, she is hitting .338 with 144 hits, 68 runs, 16 home runs, 78 RBI and 31 doubles.
Duhe padded her stats with a torrid finish that saw her hit safely in the final 14 games, tying a school record. During that stretch, she hit .632 and raised her season batting average 119 points. Thanks to her tremendous final month of the season, Duhe ended the regular season with the Southland's highest batting average (.444), slugging percentage (.722) and on-base percentage (.506) against league opponents.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher on a 4.00 scale, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his or her current institution and be nominated by his or her sports information director. Only student-athletes who were selected first team Academic All-District are eligible for inclusion on the Academic All-American team.
