NATCHITOCHES – After leading Southeastern Louisiana to its best record on the diamond in school history, head coach
Jay Artigues earned postseason honors on Saturday when he was named the Co-Coach of the Year on the 2010 Louisiana Sports Writers Association All-Louisiana College Baseball team.
Artigues, who led Southeastern to a 40-19 record, was joined on the team by four Lions that included second-team selections
Chris Franklin (pitcher),
Justin Boudreaux (shortstop),
Joe Sparacino (designated hitter) and honorable mention pick
Jordan Hymel (pitcher).
The team was announced this weekend after voting by state baseball sports information directors and a voting panel of LSWA members.
In his fifth season in charge of the Southeastern program, Artigues guided the Lions to their best record overall while equaling the school's best record (21-12) in Southland Conference play. After earning a three-game sweep early in the season at Mississippi State, Southeastern entered the national rankings for the first time as a Division I member and spent the next eight weeks in the polls.
Artigues shared Coach of the Year honors with Tony Robichaux of Louisiana-Lafayette. Robichaux guided the Ragin' Cajuns to one of the most remarkable second half runs in recent memory as they finished the 2010 regular season with a 23-4 mark in the final 27 games, including 17-1 in Sun Belt Conference games.
Franklin went 8-7 on the season with a 3.87 earned run average and seven saves on the year while leading the team in with 82 strikeouts in 88.1 innings pitched. The senior, who was selected in the 12th round by the San Diego Padres and is pitching for the team's short-season Class A team in Eugene, Ore., pitched in 26 games with five starts.
Boudreaux, a sophomore from Prairieville, led Southeastern with 13 home runs and a Southland-Conference best 66 RBI on the season. The former Dutchtown High product, who was a second-team All-Southland Conference selection, hit .313 on the season and led Southeastern in runs scored (66) and was tied for the team lead in stolen bases (17).
Sparacino, a junior from Alabaster, Ala., hit .324 on the season and established career-highs in home runs (8), slugging percentage (.561), on-base percentage (.448) and walks (23). Sparacino ended season with a career-best 12-game hitting streak and belted a ninth-inning grand slam to help Lions earn a three-game sweep at Stephen F. Austin.
Hymel, who earlier earned Freshman All-America honors by Louisville Slugger, went 7-1 on the mound with 41 strikeouts in 64.0 innings pitched. The former Lutcher High product appeared in 17 games with 11 starts as a true freshman and finished third on the team in wins and games started.
He earned a win in consecutive road starts at Southern, Louisiana-Lafayette and Jackson State and allowed two hits in six-innings to earn a Southland Conference win at Lamar. Hymel pitched a season-high seven innings in earning win over Texas State, helping the Lions to a Southland Conference series win over the eventual regular-season champions.
Tulane third baseman Rob Segedin was named Louisiana's Hitter of the Year while teammate Blake Crohan picked up Freshman of the Year honors.
Joining Segedin and Crohan for top honors were Zach Osborne of Louisiana-Lafayette for Pitcher of the Year; Northwestern State's Oscar Garcia for Newcomer of the Year.
LSU led the state with four first team selections while Tulane place three players on the first team. LSU's four included catcher Micah Gibbs (.392 BA-9 HR-55 RBI), first baseman Blake Dean (.344-11-69), designated hitter Matt Gaudet (.289-19-66), and outfielder Mikie Mahtook (.335-14-49).

And joining Osborne and Pepitone on the mound were Northwestern State's Luke Irvine (7-4 record, 2.91 ERA) and Centenary's Boone Whiting (6-2, 3.21).

In his first season at Northwestern State after transferring from El Paso CC in his hometown, Garcia led the Demons with 87 hits, which was one shy of the single-season school record. He hit .375 for the year with six home runs, 48 RBIs, and three triples. He was also one of the toughest hitters in the country to strikeout, after having fanned just 12 times in 232 at-bats.
