CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. –
Southeastern Louisiana University freshman Philipp Westermann was one of 153 players named Wednesday to the Division I PING All-Region team in a release by the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Westermann, from Pinneburg, Germany, was one of 25 golfers on the Central Region team that included schools in Arkansas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. The freshman, who enrolled in school in January and helped lead Southeastern to the Southland Conference championship, paced the Lions in scoring average (71.92) in eight events during the spring with one win and five top-five finishes.

“It’s very exciting to see Phillip get national notice as a freshman,” Southeastern head coach Tim Baldwin said. “As a freshman, to be included with some of the best collegiate golfers in the region as well as across the country is very good for our program. He now has a chance to earn All-America honors and could be a multi-year recipient before he finished his career at Southeastern.”

Currently rated No. 37 in the GolfStat Cup standings, Westermann was named the Freshman of the Year by the Southland Conference after finishing in a fourth-place tie. Westermann earned medalist honors in his collegiate debut at the UTSA/Oak Hills Invitational and was twice named the Southland Conference Golfer of the Month.

Westermann, one of two freshman named to the All-Central Region team, is the third Southeastern golfer to earn PING notice joining 2002 honorable mention All-American Andy Smith and 2007 All-Central Region selection Matthew Carvell.
