LAKE CHARLES – Southeastern Louisiana University placed three members on the 2010 All-Louisiana men’s collegiate golf team as announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Philipp Westermann earned first-team honors for the Lions while Cedric Scotto and Alvaro Arizabaleta were each named to the second team. Arizabaleta, who was earlier selected as the Southland Conference Golfer-of-the-Year, capped off an impressive year as he was named the state’s Freshman of the Year while Horacio Leon was named Newcomer of the Year.

Westermann, a freshman from Pinneberg, Germany, earned team medalist honors in his first year with the Lions after posting a 71.92 scoring average in 24 rounds of play. Westermann, a two-time Southland Conference Golfer of the Month, earned a victory in his collegiate debut in January and earned five top-five finishes. He earned a fourth-place finish at the Southland Conference Championships at Carter Plantation, helping the Lions to their third league title and first since 2000.

Arizabaleta, from Cali, Columbia, finished third overall for the Lions in scoring average (72.64) in 33 rounds of action. The freshman recorded three top-five finishes highlighted by an eight-stroke victory at the Southland Conference Championships and becoming the third Lion to claim the league’s medalist honors joining Scotto (2009) and former letterwinner Bill Sherman (1998).

Scotto, a first-team All-LSWA selection in 2009, recorded a 72.56 scoring average in a team-high 36 rounds of play and was named First-Team All-Southland Conference for the second consecutive year. The junior from Albi, France was selected the Southland Conference Golf Student-Athlete of the Year and was a member of the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District VI At-Large Team. Scotto earned Southland Conference Golfer of the Month honors and posted five top-10 finishes in 12 events during the year, including wins at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic in the fall and the Louisiana Tech Bulldog Classic in the spring.

Leon, a sophomore transfer from Tulsa, posted the fourth-lowest average (74.06) for the Lions in 33 rounds of action. Leon posted one top-10 finish - a ninth-place performance (73-72-71-216) at the Louisiana Tech/Squire Creek Classic and posted lowest 54-hole score (70-71-74-215) in his Southeastern debut at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. He carded a low round of 69 at the UNO/Mardi Gras Invitational at TPC Louisiana and finished 11th overall at the UALR/First Tee Classic, tying his low round of 69, and helping Southeastern to the team championship.

LSU and Tulane dominated the 2010 all-Louisiana men’s and women’s collegiate golf teams as announced by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

The Tigers landed two players on the men’s first team and one on the second while having Andrew Loupe named player of the year and Chuck Winstead coach of the year.

Tulane led the women’s team with three first team selections and had Janine Fellows named player of the year, Maribel Lopez Porras freshman of the year and John Thomas Horton coach of the year.

The LSU Tigers had their most successful campaign in more than a decade, placing fifth in the NCAA regional’s and landing a spot in the NCAA championship for the first time since 1997. They won three tournament titles during the year and placed fifth in the SEC tournament.

Tulane won three women’s titles during the year including the C-USA crown and made a trip to the NCAA championship finals. Horton was named the C-USA coach of the year and has now been named the LSWA coach of the year twice.

Loupe was one of the nation’s top collegiate scorers with a 71.9 stroke average. He finished fourth at the SEC tournament, won the Louisiana Classics and earned first team all-conference honors.

Joining Loupe and Westermann on the first team are LSU’s John Peterson, Philipp Fendt of Louisiana-Lafayette and Oscar Zetterwall of UNO.

Arizabaleta and Scotto were joined on the second team by Ken Looper of UNO, Andrew Noto of Louisiana-Lafayette and Sang Yi of LSU.

Peterson had also been a first team pick last season while Fendt and Loupe were second team selections.

Winstead was named coach of the year for the second time.

Fellows posted a 74.31 stroke average for the Tulane women and was named the C-USA co-player of the year. Several times she broke 70 during the season and posted a tournament record four under 67 during the C-USA championship where she was the runnerup.

Joining her on the women’s six member team are teammates Linn Gustafsson (last year’s player of the year) and Samantha Troyanovich, Angela Drane of Louisiana-Monroe and Megan McChrystal and Tessa Teachman of LSU.

McChrystal ran a close second on the player of the year honors after posting a 73.16 stroke average, tying for fifth at the NCAA tournament after shooting a tournament low of 64 and finishing 10th at the SEC event and sixth at the NCAA regional’s.

Porras, the women’s rookie of the year, had a 76 stroke average and finished eighth at the C-USA tournament.
