HAMBURG, Germany – Southeastern Louisiana University freshman
Philipp Westermann continued his strong summer of international golf as he claimed the German International Amateur last weekend at the Gut Kaden Golf Club.
Westermann, the 2010 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, won the title in his native country after capturing the title by one stroke over countryman Marcel Schneider. Westermann finished the 72-hole tournament at 9-under-par 279 that included a 4-under 68 in the opening round.
Westermann, who was the only player to record all rounds under par, moved into a fourth-place tie after carding a 1-under 71 in the second round and moved into second place after posting a 70 in the third round, putting him within two shots of Pedro Figueiredo of Italy. Westermann fired a 2-under 70 in the final round.
The victory in his hometown, his first on the international amateur circuit, highlighted a strong summer for Westermann, who is expected to compete in the World Amateur Team Championship in November. Westermann, who earned All-America honors from Golfweek, finished fifth at the British Amateur Open and advanced to match play.
In his first season with the Lions, Westermann posted a 71.92 scoring average with one win and five top-five performances in eight events and helped Southeastern to its third Southland Conference title and fourth appearance in the NCAA Regionals. The freshman finished the season No. 37 nationally in the GolfStat Cup rankings and was a PING All-Central Region selection.
