Southeastern opens the season Sept. 2 at Tulane
HAMMOND – Zeke Jones scored two touchdowns in a brief appearance and freshman
Jae Cutno caught a team-high four passes for 78 yards and a touchdown as the Southeastern Louisiana University football team held its first controlled scrimmage on Saturday in Strawberry Stadium.
Tyler Beatty, directing the No. 1 offense, completed 8 of 14 passes for 119 yards while
B.J. Young, in charge of the No. 2 offense, went 6-for-9 for 43 yards while scoring on a 3-yard scamper.
Ron Walker, a former Archbishop Shaw product and transfer from Northern Illinois, scored on a 91-yard kickoff return.
Jones, a sophomore from Springfield, scored on the first play of the scrimmage against the No. 2 defense as he scored on a 20-yard pass from Beatty during the Lions’ red zone drills. Jones , who gained 14 yards on five carries, added a 2-yard TD in goal-line drills while
Sam Fairley added a 3-yard score.
Cutno, a freshman from Central, caught a 19-yard pass from
Gavin Webster before the duo combined on a 45-yard scoring pass for the No. 2 offense.
Seth Sebastian booted a 47-yard field goal for the Lions while
Jake Saltalamacchia converted on field goals of 23 and 20 yards.
Freshman
Walter Smith led the defense with a game-high seven tackles and an interception.
Zach Albin and
Lindsey Leavoy each added five stops for the defense while
Luther Chambers and
Nathan Clophus each recorded sacks.
