HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana senior Chris Mycoskie is one of three recipients of the 2010 Ace Higgins Award, presented by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association to the state's top sports information student assistants.
Mycoskie shares the honor with Matthew Fowler of Northwestern State and Matt Mendleson of Tulane. The three will each receive $200 from the LSWA to help offset their college expenses for the fall semester.
Mycoskie, who will complete his degree requirements in December, joined the SLU office in August 2009 after seven years as a sports anchor and reporter for Monroe and Baton Rouge television stations. He handled track and field duties for the Lions, including the layout and design of the 2009-10 media guide. He has also been involved in broadcasting and serving as official scorer for the SLU baseball team. He is the grandson of original University of Texas sports information director Bill Sansing, who was inducted into the CoSIDA Veterans Hall of Fame in 2009.
Fowler, a senior in general studies at Northwestern, has worked in the SID office for two years and looks to become a full-time SID somewhere once his college days are over. He has helped operate the Stat Crew programs for all sports at Northwestern, written releases for baseball and women's tennis and this year besides editing the women's soccer guide will be the primary contact for cross country and women's tennis and the secondary contact for volleyball and baseball.
Mendleson, who is scheduled to graduate from Tulane in 2012, has been a big part of Tulane's office who also wants to possibly enter the profession on a full-time basis. He has worked football, men's and women's basketball, volleyball and baseball for the Green Wave. He has also volunteered with the New Orleans Saints during fall camp and the draft and was part of Tulane's effort in hosting the 2010 NCAA men's basketball first and second rounds at the New Orleans Arena.
The annual award is named after the longtime former LSU SID, who served as lead publicist from 1954-66.
"This may be the first time that the voting SIDs has decided that all three nominees should be given a part of the award," said LSWA Past President and current Treasurer Kent Lowe, who oversees the Ace Higgins balloting for the association. "But it was readily apparent to me that this would be very difficult to separate these candidates who have all done great work for their schools and hopefully will continue to be involved in athletic administration as they move forward. We are pleased to again honor the legacy of Ace Higgins by presenting the award to such worthy student assistants."
