NATCHITOCHES – UTSA's Maria Jose Rojas netted a goal with just over two minutes left in double overtime to eliminate Southeastern Louisiana, 1-0, in the opening round of the Southland Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Thursday night in the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.

The Lady Lions end their season with an 11-7-1 record. UTSA improved to 9-8-2 overall and will face top seed Stephen F. Austin on Friday at 7 p.m. in the tournament semifinals.

“We fought hard today and for the most part we played well,” Southeastern head coach Blake Hornbuckle said. “Ultimately, we were too banged up to finish the job.”

UTSA had the first scoring opportunity of the match in the 25th minute, as junior Cassie Northrup made a sliding save on a breakaway by Rojas. Northrup would turn away another Rojas effort five minutes later. Southeastern's lone shot of the opening half came from sophomore Ann Stranges, who had her shot grabbed on a sliding stop by Danielle Snyder.

Southeastern nearly broke the tie with 30 minutes left in the second half. Junior Karly Dagys got free on a breakaway, but Snyder held firm and kept the Lady Lions off the board. Laylla da Cruz got free a few minutes later, but Northrup knocked the shot away to keep the match scoreless.

Liv Nyhegn hit the cross bar on a shot with 15 minutes left and the rebound went right to Anissa Munson. Munson's header also found the cross bar and Southeastern was able to clear the ball and leave the match scoreless in regulation.

Southeastern kept the ball on its side of the field for the majority of the first overtime, but couldn't get off a shot. Midway through the period, Rojas got free on another breakaway, but her shot sailed just wide.

In the second overtime, Jodi Leroy nearly ended the match with a header than Northrup was able to stop.

Southeastern will return all but one player – senior Kyle MacIntosh – for the 2012 season.
