SAN MARCOS, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team was unable to avoid a series sweep on Sunday, falling to Texas State, 12-1, in Southland Conference action at Bobcat Field.
The Lady Lions fell to 14-18 overall and 4-8 in Southland play. Jenna Emery was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBI to help Texas State (18-18, 11-7 Southland) to close out the sleep.
Southeastern managed just three hits in the game off Texas State pitchers Anne Marie Taylor (8-4) and Crystal Alaniz. The Lady Lions' lone run came on a home run by freshman
Jessie Browne. Junior
Meghan Gomez and sophomore
Kelsey Nichols had the other hits for Southeastern.
Texas State jumped out to the lead in the bottom of the first inning against Southeastern sophomore
Kenna Terry (2-3). McKenzie Baack doubled home the game's first two runs and later scored on an RBI single by Anna Hernandez to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
The Bobcats blew open the game in the bottom of the third inning. Haley Lemons started the scoring with an RBI double to chase Terry. Junior
Vicki Honeycutt replaced Terry and allowed another run to come in on a wild pitch.
An RBI single by Emery, a sacrifice fly by Allyce Rother and a two-run double by Megan Parten capped the scoring for Texas State in a six-run third inning. When Honeycutt retired Lindsay Matt to end the inning, the Bobcats led 9-0.
Taylor retired the first nine Southeastern batters before Nichols led off the fourth inning with an infield single. A single by Gomez gave the Lady Lions a pair of base runners, but Taylor retired freshman
Megan Moore to keep Southeastern off the board.
Texas State added to its lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. A three-run home run by Emery put the Bobcats ahead, 12-0.
Southeastern avoided the shutout in the top of the fifth inning. With one out, Browne launched her second home run of the season over the left field fence. Alaniz sat down freshmen
Kenzie Howe and
Megan McCollum to close the game and enforce the mercy rule.
Southeastern will look to get back on track next week with four home games on tap. The Lady Lions will open the home stand on Wednesday, hosting Southern at 6 p.m. at North Oak Park.
