LAKE CHARLES - Southeastern Louisiana senior wide receiver Simmie Yarborough and junior defensive end Devan Walker were named to the 2011 Preseason All-Southland Conference Football Teams, which were announced by the league office in conjunction with the Southland Football Media Days Wednesday at the L'auberge du lac Casino Resort.
Both Yarborough, a native or Brookhaven, Miss., and Walker, who hails from Baton Rouge, were both named to the first team. Yarborough was a second team All-Southland pick last season.
Yarborough led the Lions with 60 catches for 709 yards and nine touchdowns a season ago. In 2010, he ranked among the Southland Conference leaders in receptions per game (6.0, 3rd), receiving yards per game (70.9, 6th), touchdowns (9, 5th) and scoring (54 points, 10th). His single-season totals for receptions (3rd), receiving touchdowns (3rd), receptions per game (2nd), receiving yards (5th) and total touchdowns (10th) are among the top performances in school history.
With a strong senior season, Yarborough will further cement his name in Southeastern lore. Already the school's career leader with 168 catches and 27 receiving touchdowns, he needs 343 yards to become Southeastern's career leader in that category. He is also among the school's all-time best in total touchdowns (27, 6th) and points (164, 6th).
In 2010, Walker ranked among the Southland Conference leaders with four sacks (15th) and eight tackles for loss (12th). He also finished with 35 tackles, including 22 solo stops. Walker will enter his junior campaign sixth on the school's career list with 10 quarterback hurries.
Yarborough, Walker and the rest of the Lions will open preseason practice on Aug. 2. Southeastern will open the 2011 campaign with a 2:30 p.m. contest at Tulane on Sept. 3.
