HAMMOND, La. – Wrapping up an exciting fall practice, the Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team will host a five-game fall world series that will run Oct. 26 – Nov. 2.
“We had a great fall,” head coach
Jay Artigues said. “I got to evaluate the new guys coming in and how they mesh with the returners.”
The Heart of the Lion World Series will be played Oct. 26 (Fri.), Oct. 28 (Sun.), Oct. 30 (Tues.), Nov. 1 (Thurs.) and Nov. 2 (Fri.) with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. in all games except the last. The first pitch for game five will be at 1 p.m. Even though it is a best of five series, all five games will be played.
Fans can watch the entire series on Lion Vision, a subscription-based video feed available at LionSports.net.
The seven seniors were split into two teams and chose their teammates in a draft. Seniors
Alex Marse (team captain),
Buck Bernard and
Kaleb Manuel chose the name Rougaroux for their team, a mythological creature rooted deep in Cajun folklore.
Players chosen by the Rougaroux include: Jameson Fisher,
Brett Hoffman, Gabe Von Rosenberg, Kyle Cedotal, Jesse Buratt, Ryan Byers, Beau Moore,
Matt Pittari,
Britt Gautreaux, Mason Klotz, Brennan Catalano,
Sam Roberson, Gavin Culpepper,
Andro Cutura,
John Gremillion and Vito Perna.
The Rougaroux will be coached by volunteer assistant
Cass Hargis, Southeastern's career hits leader, while recruiting coordinator
Matt Riser will act as the general manager. Hargis will be joined in the dugout by student assistant Clint Anders and bat boy Champ Artigues.
Seniors
Jordan Hymel (team captain),
Ben Hernandez,
Harry Slade,
Ladd Rhodes and teammates will play under the Team Grizz banner.
Players selected by Team Grizz include: Corey Bryan,
Kyle Bracey, Aaron Haag, Tate Scioneaux,
Tanner Rainey,
Josh Watkins, Daniel Midyett, Gabe Woods,
Sean Kennel,
Kyle Keller, Dylan Meyers,
Dylan Hills, Logan Riddell,
Jason Greenleaf and Guy Hymel.
Team Grizz will be coached by pitching coach
Daniel Latham while head coach
Jay Artigues will act as general manager. Latham will be joined in the dugout by sport performance graduate assistant Jamey Mroz and bat boy Casey Artigues.
The Rougaroux, by virtue of a coin toss, will be the home team in games one and three, alternating with Team Grizz. Game five will be determined by another coin toss. Von Rosenberg, a Zachary High School graduate, will get the series opening nod on the mound for the Rougaroux while Team Grizz will counter with Hymel.
Performances during the world series will be incorporated into the baseball program's Heart of the Lion team building competition held each fall, but there will be some penalties/rewards specifically tied to the series outcome.
The winning team will enjoy the time-honored tradition of steak at the annual team dinner while the losing team will be fed beans. The losing team will also put on a charity car wash and be required, as part of the event, to wash the vehicles of the winning team.
Should the series wind up a little more lopsided than a 3-2 split, there will be additional penalties for the losing team. If the series winds up 4-1, the losing team will also be subjected to a day of scrubbing down Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field. If the losing team is swept, they will also “dress up” for a dance off at a future Southeastern home athletic event.
All five games will be played at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
