LAFAYETTE – Southeastern Louisiana freshmen
Reginka Nychytailova and
Sarah Kriem teamed to win the main draw of the top doubles flight, while the Lions' other doubles tandems both won the consolation draw at the Ragin' Cajun Classic which concluded Saturday on the Louisiana-Lafayette campus.
Southeastern's No. 2 team of freshman
Renee Villarreal and sophomore
Adriana Castillo won the consolation draw, as did the No. 3 tandem of freshman
Nastya Tokareva and sophomore
Morgane Charpenne.
In singles play, Nychytailova, Kriem and Villarreal each picked up singles wins on Saturday. Five of the six Southeastern players posted combined winning records in singles and doubles play in the tournament, while Charpenne finished a solid 3-3. Southeastern head coach
Jason Hayes was proud of his team's efforts in the first competition of the fall.
“This was a very good start for us,” Hayes commented. “We saw some things we'll have to continue to improve on, but overall I'm very happy with what I saw in our first tournament.”
Nychytailova and Kriem opened Saturday with a 9-8 win over Sophie Van den Aarsen and Nicole Breaux of Louisiana-Lafayette. The pairing closed out the tournament title with an 8-4 win over Louisiana-Monroe's Sophie Rufyikiri and Medy Blankvoort.
Villarreal and Castillo bounced back from a loss to open the tournament to win the consolation draw. The Lion duo handled Arkansas State's Jess Heeps-Eriksen and Janelle Fung, 8-1, to open the day. Later, they got past Kate Lanier and Lauren May of Southern Miss to close the tournament with an 8-6 win.
Charpenne and Tokareva lost their opening match on Saturday, but rallied in their final match of the tournament. The Lion tandem was too much for USM's Mackenzie Oskin and Eleanor Grossman in an 8-5 victory.
Kriem picked up the consolation draw win in the No. 4 bracket after losing her opening match on Friday. On Saturday, she rolled past Melissa Burchartt of Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-2, 6-2.
Villarreal picked up the win on Saturday to earn third place in the No. 3 singles draw. The Monterrey, Mexico native cruised past Ioana Teu, 6-4, 6-1, to close her first weekend of collegiate action.
Nychytailova rallied after a pair of hard-fought losses on the opening day of competition. The Maripol, Ukraine native made short work of USM's Kate Lanier, 6-4, 6-2, to close the tourney on a high note.
Southeastern will be back in action on Oct. 19-21, when it travels to Pensacola, Fla. to compete in the UWF Invitational hosted by West Florida.
