HAMMOND, La. – Team Grizz squandered one lead, but answered with five runs in the fifth inning Friday to defeat the Rougaroux, 9-6 in seven innings, and complete a five-game sweep in the Heart of the Lion World Series.
The Rougaroux (0-5) came from four down to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Team Grizz (5-0) responded by sending 10 batters to the plate in a five-run fifth. The Rougaroux tacked on runs in the fifth and seventh innings, but it was too little too late.
Grizz starter
Jordan Hymel (1-0) picked up the win while freshman left-hander Brennan Catalano (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing the only runs he gave up in 18.1 innings of work this fall.
As the winning team, Team Grizz will enjoy the time-honored tradition of steak at the annual team dinner while the Rougaroux will be fed beans. The Rougaroux will also put on a charity car wash to benefit Our Daily Bread Food Pantry in Hammond and be required, as part of the event, to wash Team Grizz's vehicles.
Because it was a sweep, the Rougaroux will also be subjected to a day of scrubbing down Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field and will “dress up” for a dance off at a future Southeastern home athletic event.
Series performances will be incorporated into the baseball program's Heart of the Lion team building competition held each fall.
The Lions open the 2013 season, at home, against Tennessee-Martin on Feb. 13. Season ticket information will be available to the general public in mid-January. For ticket information call the Southeastern Athletic Ticket Office at (985) 549-5466 or visit www.LionSports.net.
