HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team went 0-3 on day two of the Lion Classic on Saturday at North Oak Park.

The Lady Lions (0-3) opened the day with an 8-3 loss to Akron. Later that afternoon, Kansas blanked Southeastern, 11-0 in five innings. In the nightcap, Northern Colorado rallied for a 6-5 walk off victory.

At the plate, senior outfielder Katie Matthews led Southeastern with a 4-for-10 performance in the three games. Junior Katie Doyle also had three hits in her Lady Lion debut, driving in two runs.

Southeastern will close out tournament action on Sunday, facing Northern Illinois at 9 a.m. and Southern at 1 p.m. Live stats for both games will be available at www.LionSports.net.

Game One – Akron 8, Southeastern Louisiana 3
Akron jumped out to a lead in the top of the first against Southeastern junior starter Kenna Terry (0-2). Katie Gross led off the inning with a double and scored when Alissa Birkhimer powered an opposite field home run to give the Zips a 2-0 lead.

Akron added to its lead in the third, as Birkhimer struck again. After the first two runners of the inning reached, Birkhimer hit a three-run shot in nearly the same spot as her first bomb of the game to push the lead to 5-0.

Akron tacked on two more in the top of the fifth, before Southeastern broke through in the bottom of the inning. Senior Lauren Coniglio led off the inning with a double and scored when sophomore Kayla Elswick followed with a double of her own. Two outs later, sophomore Megan McCullom singled to score Elswick and cut the Akron lead to 7-2.

The Zips added a run in the sixth to push the lead to 8-2. In the bottom of the seventh, McCullom drew a two-out walk, moved to second on a single by junior Ariell Van Hook and scored on a double by Doyle. That was as close as Southeastern would get, however, as Akron reliever Lisa Lash struck out Matthews to end the game.
