NEW ORLEANS, La. – A four-run Tulane fourth inning was too much for Southeastern Louisiana to overcome Tuesday, as the Lions dropped a 7-3 decision in New Orleans.
The fourth-inning explosion propelled the Green Wave to a 5-0 lead. Southeastern scored three runs in its next two at bats, but the Lions were unable to close the gap.
With one out in the fourth and a 1-0 lead, Tulane (26-11) knocked four-consecutive hits. Brennan Middleton singled and Brandon Boudreaux doubled him in. Garrett Cannizaro singled in Boudreaux and Nick Schneeberger singled in Cannizaro. Following a stolen base and a ground out, Schneeberger scored on Sean Potkay's single to left.
Southeastern (25-12) responded with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Brett Hoffman doubled to left-center field and
Ben Hernandez singled up the middle to plate Hoffman. Hernandez took second on the throw and scored on
Harry Slade's single to center.
The Green Wave tacked two more runs back on to extend the Lion deficit back to five.
Trailing 7-2 in the sixth, the Lions added the game's final run. With one out,
Brock Hebert doubled down the left-field line.
Cody Gougler knocked a two-out single to right, driving in Hebert. It was Gougler's team-leading 30th RBI of the season.
Josh Janway and
Tanner Rainey combined to shut down the Green Wave bats for the remainder of the game, but Southeastern couldn't muster any more runs.
Tulane starter Alex Byo (5-3) earned the win and D.J. Ponder picked up his sixth save.
Sean Kennel (0-1) suffered the loss for the Lions.
Southeastern (25-12) returns to Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field Wednesday to host Jackson State (25-10). First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. and the game can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9). Live statistics will be available at www.LionSports.net. The contest is a makeup of a game originally scheduled for March 21.
