Box Score

HAMMOND, La. – Southeastern Louisiana pounded out 11 hits and took advantage of a couple Jackson State miscues Wednesday as the Lions cruised to a 13-2 victory.

Freshman Kyle Keller (1-0) picked up the win after tossing six innings in his starting debut. Jason Greenleaf, Kaleb Manuel and Joseph Koon all pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

Jackson State (25-11) took the lead first with a third-inning run. After retiring the first seven batters he faced, Keller walked first baseman Ethan Bright. Keller struck out the ninth-place hitter Aneko Knowles, but then walked three consecutive batters to force in Bright.

Southeastern (26-12) scored eight unearned runs in the fourth to gain the lead. With one out, designated hitter Michael Rutland reached on a throwing error by the Tigers' third baseman Frank Solis. Brock Hebert and Jonathan Pace drew back-to-back walks to load the bases.

Right fielder Cody Gougler delivered a single to right to pick up his team-leading 31st RBI of the season and tie the game. Ladd Rhodes chopped a ball to third and Solis threw home wildly, allowing a pair to score.

Jackson State replaced starter Gary Mele (3-3) with left-hander Chris Wingard, but Wingard failed to wrap up the inning. He struck out Brett Hoffman, but walked Sam Roberson and hit Ben Hernandez to load the bases again. Harry Slade doubled into the left-field corner to clear the bases and chase Wingard.

The Tigers brought in Jeremy Gray, their third pitcher of the inning, and he surrendered an RBI-single to Michael Rutland.

Southeastern added three more runs in the sixth, on a bases-loaded double by Hebert, and two more in the eighth. Slade, Ryan Downing, Hebert and Pace rapped out four-consecutive singles for the eighth-inning runs.

Jackson State scored its final run on a solo home run by Bright leading off the fifth inning.

The Lions begin an eight-game road trip Friday at UTSA. Southeastern faces the Roadrunners in a three-game Southland Conference series.
