SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Southeastern Louisiana broke through with three sixth-inning runs against UTSA Friday and rode strong pitching to a 5-2 Southland Conference win.
UTSA (16-22, 6-13 Southland) took the lead on a first-inning solo home run by third baseman Ryan Dalton. Lion starter
Andro Cutura (5-1) settled down after the first inning, retiring nine-straight batters at one point.
Cutura won his fourth-consecutive conference start.
Stefan Lopez earned his 13th save of the season, setting the Southeastern single-season record. Lopez now has 23 career saves, also a school record, and is just four saves shy of tying the conference's career record.
Roadrunner starting, and losing, pitcher Casey Selsor (3-5) shutout the Lions through the first five innings.
Leading off the sixth inning for Southeastern (27-12, 12-7 Southland),
Ben Hernandez grounded a ball up the middle that the second baseman failed to cleanly pull out of his glove. Hernandez reached on the error and moved to second on
Harry Slade's ground out to first.
Michael Rutland's infield single moved Hernandez to third; the Lions' shortstop scored to tie the game on
Brock Hebert's second hit of the game.
Jonathan Pace grounded to short, but RJ Perucki's throw to second was wild. Rutland scored, and Hebert and Pace both moved into scoring position. Hebert would score on a wild pitch.
The Lions added two more in the seventh. With one out, Hernandez singled to right and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Rutland drove a two-out single up the middle to score Hernandez and Rutland took second on the throw home. Hebert drove home Rutland with another single up the middle.
Hebert stole second, his 30th of the season, and is just one shy of tying the Southeastern single-season record for stolen bases.
A pair of southpaws are slated to throw Saturday at 2 p.m. Junior
Jordan Hymel (5-2, 2.59) heads to the hill for the Lions and will be opposed by UTSA's Michael Kraft (6-3, 4.25).
