Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Superb pitching kept Southeastern Louisiana close Sunday and the Lion bats struck late for a 4-2 Southland Conference victory over UTSA. The Lions won the series at UTSA for the second straight season.
Cody Gougler led off the second inning with his third home run of the season, giving the Lions a 1-0 lead.
UTSA (17-23, 7-14 Southland) scored a pair of third-inning runs to go ahead, 2-1. RJ Perucki singled to open the inning and was sacrificed to second by John Bormann. Casey Selsor continued his hot hitting with a triple to right, driving in Perucki. Selsor scored on Matthew James single up the middle.
Buck Bernard then settled down, shutting down the Roadrunner bats in the fourth.
Southeastern (28-13, 13-8 Southland) tied the score in the fifth.
Ben Hernandez singled to right with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Harry Slade followed with a single to right, driving in Hernandez.
Dylan Hills (6-2) took over in the sixth inning and picked up the win with three shutout innings of relief.
Stefan Lopez worked a perfect ninth to pick up his 14th save and extend his single-season and career records (24).
The Lions scored the go-ahead run in the eighth.
Sam Roberson, pinch-hitting for
Jacob Fisher, singled to right. He moved up on
Brett Hoffman's ground out and scored on Hernandez's third hit of the game.
Southeastern tacked on an insurance run in the ninth. With two outs,
Jonathan Pace was hit by a pitch and scored on Gougler's double off the left-field wall.
With the win, and a Sam Houston State loss at McNeese State, Southeastern is four games in back of the Bearkats for second place in the conference.
The Lions travel to LSU Wednesday to face the Tigers. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
