MCKINNEY, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana University golf team looks for its second golf title of the season as it begins play on Monday in the 49th annual Southland Conference Golf Championships at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club.
Southeastern, the top-rated team in the 10-team event, and 24-time team champion Lamar teeing off beginning at 9:20 a.m. Action begins in the 10-team field at 8 a.m. with the overall winner receiving the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Regionals.
Southeastern, which is ranked No. 58 in the latest GolfStat.com rankings, looks for its fourth overall conference title and first since an 11-shot victory over Central Arkansas in the 2010 league championship at Carter Plantation. The Lions, who are also looking for their third bid to the NCAA Regionals in the past six seasons, claimed their other two league titles in 1998 and 2000.
Junior
Philipp Westermann, who finished tied for 10th last season and was fourth in 2010, is the top-rated golfer in the Southland Conference with a 71.79 scoring average. The two-time All-Southland Conference performer and 2010 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year has earned four overall victories and 20 top-10 finishes in 29 career events.
Joining Westermann in the lineup is junior
Rhys West, who is averaging 73.07 per round. Rounding out the Lions' five-man lineup are the freshman trio of
Santiago Mejia (74.50),
Grady Brame (75.66) and
Baptiste Courtachon (75.07).
Joining Southeastern and Lamar in the field are defending champion UT Arlington, UCA, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Sam Houston State, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State and UTSA.
