CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The Southeastern Louisiana softball team dropped a 4-0 decision to Southland Conference foe Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in the series opener Friday afternoon at Chapman Field.

Southeastern fell to 7-27 overall and 1-8 in Southland Conference play with the loss. The host Islanders ran their record to 11-14 overall and 7-4 in league action.

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior pitcher Greta Cecchetti (6-3) held Southeastern to three hits on the way to the shutout victory. Junior outfielder Michelle Duhe, junior first baseman Ariell Van Hook and junior outfielder Kelsey Nichols each had singles for the Lady Lions.

The Islanders jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against Southeastern junior starter Kati Morse (2-4). Senior centerfielder Cassie Redman led off the inning with a single and scored one out later on an RBI single by senior second baseman Sandy Schumann to give the home team a 1-0 advantage.

Senior pitcher Vicki Honeycutt took over in the circle for Morse in the second inning. The Islanders were able to plate two runs off the St. Francisville native, as a fielding error by senior third baseman Trish Bliss led to a pair of unearned scores and a 3-0 Islander lead.

Honeycutt settled down from there, but the Lady Lions couldn't get anything going offensively against Cecchetti. Southeastern mounted its best threat in the top of the fifth inning. A leadoff single by Nichols and a walk drawn by senior third baseman Lauren Coniglio put a pair of runners on with one out. However, Cecchetti recovered to retire Duhe and sophomore second baseman Megan McCollum to keep Southeastern off the board.

The Islanders added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman shortstop Hayley Galloway reached on a one-out single and scored one out later on an RBI single by senior left fielder Hannah Schwarz to give Texas A&M-Corpus Christi a four-run cushion. Cecchetti sat Southeastern down in order in the seventh to close out the win.

The series concludes on Saturday with a 12 p.m. contest. Live stats for the contest will be available at www.goislanders.com.
