CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Texas A&M-Corpus Christi scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to rally past Southeastern Louisiana for a 3-1 victory in Southland Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at Chapman Field.
Southeastern fell to 7-28 overall and 1-9 in Southland Conference play. The Islanders (12-14, 8-4 Southland) completed the series sweep thanks to a tie-breaking two-run single by senior second baseman Sandy Schumann.
Southeastern mounted an early threat in the top of the second inning. Senior catcher
Meghan Gomez doubled down the right field line to lead off the inning. However, Gomez was stranded, as Islander senior pitcher Jordan Trujillo retired the next three Lion batters.
The Lady Lions threatened again in their half of the third inning. Senior designated player
Katie Matthews and sophomore second baseman
Megan McCollum each drew walks to put a pair on, but Trujillo forced junior first baseman
Ariell Van Hook to ground out to end the inning.
The story was the same in the Southeastern half of the fourth inning, as Gomez and junior outfielder
Katie Doyle led off the frame with back-to-back singles, but Trujillo retired junior outfielder
Kelsey Nichols and forced senior third baseman
Lauren Coniglio to ground into a double play to keep Southeastern scoreless.
The Lady Lions finally broke through in the fifth. Sophomore shortstop
Kayla Elswick drew a walk to lead off the inning and was bunted over to second by Matthews. Consecutive singles by junior outfielder
Michelle Duhe, McCollum and Van Hook plated the game's first run and loaded the bases with one out. However, Southeastern would manage just one run, as A&M-Corpus Christi senior reliever Greta Cecchetti (7-3) sat Gomez and Doyle down to keep the lead at 1-0.
While Southeastern was threatening in nearly every inning, Lady Lion junior
Kenna Terry (2-12) was cruising through the first four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, singles by junior right fielder Stephanie Vead, freshman catcher Mickayla Heller and senior centerfielder Cassie Redman loaded the bases with one out.
The Islanders then knotted the score with a single by senior left fielder Hannah Schwarz. Schumman then gave A&M-Corpus Christi the lead for good with a two-run single to chase Terry from the game. Southeastern senior
Vicki Honeycutt kept the Islanders from breaking it open, retiring the next two Islanders to keep it at 3-1.
Cecchetti wouldn't allow Southeastern to get any closer. After throwing a complete game three-hit shutout on Friday, she retired the Lady Lions in order in the final two innings to secure the sweep.
Southeastern will be back in action on Monday, traveling to Baton Rouge to face Southern at 4 p.m. in a game rescheduled from an earlier rainout. Fans can follow Monday's action via Twitter at
