BATON ROUGE – Southeastern Louisiana hammered Southern pitchers for a season-high 15 hits – including a single-game school record seven doubles – on the way to a 12-8 win in non-conference softball action Monday evening at Lady Jaguar Field.
 
Southeastern improved to 8-28 overall with the win, dropping Southern's overall mark to 4-22.
 
Junior first baseman Ariell Van Hook was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI for the Lady Lions. Junior designated player Katie Doyle, who finished 3-for-3 with three runs scored, and senior catcher Meghan Gomez, who contributed two doubles to Southeastern's record total, each drove in two runs for Southeastern. Eight of Southeastern's nine starters in the lineup had at least one RBI in the victory.
 
“We were really proud of the way we performed at the plate today,” Southeastern Louisiana head coach Pete Langlois commented. “We know Southern has several players who can really swing  it, so it was important for us to be able to come up with a big offensive performance.”
 
Senior Vicki Honeycutt (3-3) took the win in the circle for the Lady Lions, striking out six batters in five innings of work. Junior Kenna Terry fanned two in two innings of relief to preserve the victory.
 
Southeastern jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Southern freshman Carla Arismendi (2-5) in the top of the first inning. Sophomore second baseman Megan McCollum reached on a two-out single and scored on a double off the left centerfield fence by Gomez.
 
The lead would be short-lived, however, as Southern came back with two runs in the second inning. A two-out home run by sophomore catcher Harley Roller put the Lady Jags up, 2-1.
 
Southeastern knotted the score in the top of the second inning. Doyle led off the inning with a single and hustled to advance all the way to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Katie Matthews. Senior third baseman Trish Bliss then tied the score with a sharp single to left field to allow Doyle to walk in.
 
The Lady Lions retook the lead in the top of the third inning. Junior outfielder Kelsey Nichols drew a walk to lead off the inning and came home when Van Hook lined a shot over the centerfield fence. The Whittier, Calif. native's fourth home run of the season gave Southeastern a 4-2 advantage.
 
Southern came right back to tie it up in its half of the third. Roller's second two-run home run of the contest evened the score at 4.
 
Southeastern took the lead for good in the top of the fourth inning. Matthews led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nichols. McCollum and Gomez followed with consecutive RBI doubles, then Van Hook singled home Gomez. Doyle and Elswick capped the scoring with back-to-back RBI doubles of their own to give the Lady Lions a commanding 10-4 lead.
 
Southern got back two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Singles by Roller, sophomore centerfielder Danielle Jackson and freshman right fielder Allison Piercefield loaded the bases with one out. After Honeycutt struck out sophomore third baseman Jasmine Payne, sophomore first baseman Desiree Dawson singled home Roller and Jackson to make it a 10-6 Lady Lion edge.
 
The Lady Lions got those runs back in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Van Hook ripped a double into the left centerfield gap. The double was the seventh of the game for the Lady Lions, setting a new school standard. Southeastern had previously had six doubles in a game four different times with the last time coming in a win over Jackson State in 2006.
 
Van Hook would come home to score one pitch later, as Doyle ripped her first triple as a Lady Lion into the right field corner. Doyle would later come home on an RBI single to left by Matthews that put Southeastern ahead, 12-6.
 
Southern managed to score two runs in the sixth off Terry, but would get no closer. With runners on the corners and two outs in the seventh, Terry forced Roller to line out to Nichols to close out the win.
