HAMMOND – The Southeastern Louisiana University football team returned to practice on Thursday after taking an off day to concentrate on the beginning of classes for the fall semester.
The Lions, who will open the season on Sept. 1 at SEC newcomer Missouri, worked in full gear for over two hours with team drills concentrating on long drive, goal-line, third-and-long and first-and-10 situations.
“I thought we came out today and the guys really went after each other,” Southeastern head coach
Ron Roberts said. “After taking off (Wednesday) for the first day of school, I thought they came back in a really hot practice and showed great intensity from top to bottom and finished really strong.”
One of the new areas on the field that will be of importance will be at tight end, where the Lions will field its most depth since re-instating the program in 2003. Sophomore
Hunter Craven, who spent the 2011 season at tackle, along with sophomores
Jordan Moon,
Jeremy Meyers and redshirt freshman
Taylor Jenkins are all battling for the starting job that has been filled sparingly by prototypical players beginning with the pass happy days of the “Air Raid” offense under former coach Hal Mumme.
“We've got several going at it,” Roberts said of the team's depth in 2012. “
Hunter Craven is probably the guy right now we depend upon the most. They're all real young guys. There's a great amount of potential there and we're expecting them to continue to get better.”
Southeastern will return to practice on Friday beginning at 2:15 p.m. before participating in the annual “Hot August Night” in downtown Hammond. The team will take part in a Pep Rally beginning at 6:30 p.m. on the LaCarreta Stage and will be signing autographs for fans in the Downtown Development District Courtyard after.
The Lions will participate in Media Day and take their official team picture on Saturday from 12-2 p.m., before holding their second scrimmage of the fall at 6:50 p.m. All practices are open to the public.
