JACKSON, Miss. – The Southeastern Louisiana tennis team opened up 2013 with a convincing 7-0 victory over Jackson State Friday afternoon at the JSU Tennis Facility.
The Lions (1-0), who featured four new starters in the singles lineup, won all six singles matches in straight sets and two doubles matches. Jackson State fell to 0-3 with the loss.
In doubles play, sophomore
Adriana Castillo and freshman
Renee Villarreal gave Southeastern an early advantage with an 8-0 win over JSU's No. 2 team of Laura Rojas and Rebekah Adewumi.
At No. 1, freshman
Nastya Tokareva and junior
Valya Rusakova clinched the doubles point with an 8-5 win over Harshini Reddy and Kesica Jayapalan. A new rule change sees doubles play stop as soon as the point is clinched, so Southeastern's No. 3 team of senior
Isabel Brito and freshman
Reginka Nychytailova saw its match go finished.
Four newcomers occupied the top four spots in the singles lineup and the Lions were never threatened in any of their matches. At No. 1, Nychytailova powered past Karen Martinez, 6-2, 6-2. Reddy was no match for Tokareva on the No. 2 court, falling to the Southeastern freshman, 6-2, 6-0.
Rusakova, playing in her first match with Southeastern after transferring from Michigan State, made short work of Rojas in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3. Villarreal had no issues with Jayapalan in a 6-0, 6-2 rout on the No. 4 court.
A pair of Southeastern veterans got off to strong starts to preserve the shutout victory. On court 5, sophomore
Morgane Charpenne moved past Adewumi, 6-4, 6-1. Brito completed the sweep with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Angela Condorelli at No. 6.
Southeastern will continue its opening road swing with two matches on Saturday in Ruston. The day starts with a 12 p.m. match versus Louisiana Tech, before facing Grambling at 4 p.m.
