BATON ROUGE, La. – The Southeastern Louisiana University baseball team travels to Alex Box Stadium this weekend for a pair of games against Brigham Young and a Friday-night showdown with No. 2- ranked LSU.
Southeastern (3-1) faces the Cougars at 1 p.m. both Friday and Saturday. The Lions will also face No. 2-ranked LSU at 7 p.m. Friday. The Tigers (4-0) will face BYU (2-2) twice, once each Thursday and Saturday.
Friday's games can be heard in the Hammond area on KSLU-FM (90.9), on the internet through the Southeastern athletics website as well as on the KSLU iPhone and TuneIn Radio apps. Cox Sports Television will air the Southeastern-LSU game live. CST can be seen in Tangipahoa Parish on Charter Communications (channels 324/811) or Dish Network (channel 421).
The Lions are coming off a tight, 5-3 loss at Tulane this past Tuesday. Southeastern scored two runs in the first inning, taking advantage of a Green Wave passed ball.
After loading the bases to open the game, SLU freshman
Kyle Cedotal settled down and retired the next 14 consecutive batters, with the only blemish being a first-inning RBI sac fly. The Lions maintained a one-run lead into the sixth when Tulane (3-1) pushed across four runs to take the lead. Southeastern answered with a run in the seventh, but that was all the Lions could muster against the Green Wave pitching staff.
Southeastern is led in hitting by seniors
Harry Slade (.600) and reigning Southland Conference Hitter of the Week
Ben Hernandez (.545). A graduate of Zachary High School, Hernandez was 5-for-7 in Southeastern's season-opening, three-game sweep of UT-Martin. The Lions are hitting .286 as a team.
Junior right-hander
Sean Kennel (1-0, 1.50) will start on the mound for the Lions as they face BYU for the first time in school history. The Cougars will counter with junior right-hander Adam Miller (0-1, 7.20).
BYU played four games in Lubbock, Texas, to open its season. The Cougars split a pair of games with Northern Colorado, defeated Northern Illinois and lost to host Texas Tech.
Adam Law, the son of former BYU head coach and ex-major leaguer Vance Law, leads the Cougars in hitting with a .429 average. Brock Whitney (.333) and Jaycob Brugman (.308) have the next-highest averages. BYU is hitting .242 as a team entering Thursday's game against LSU.
The Tigers swept a three-game series from Maryland to open the season and knocked off fellow Southland Conference-member Lamar this past Tuesday, 8-1.
LSU, hitting .297 as a team, is led at the plate by Chris Sciambra (.583), JaCoby Jones (.444) and, the nation's leading hitter a year ago, Raph Rhymes (.357).
Senior left-hander
Jordan Hymel (0-0, 5.40), a native of Gramercy, La., will start on the hill against LSU while the Tigers will send junior right-hander Ryan Eades (0-0, 0.00) to the mound in Friday's nightcap.
In the Lions final game of the weekend, freshman right-hander
Tate Scioneaux (1-0, 4.50) will be opposed by BYU sophomore righty Jeff Barker (1-0, 1.50).
Southeastern's two baseball games against BYU (2-2) this weekend are free to the general public. Tickets to the Southeastern-LSU game can only be purchased through the LSU Athletic Ticket Office at (225) 578-2184 or online at www.LSUtix.net.
Friday and Saturday the stadium will be cleared after each game, and fans will be re-admitted to the LSU games with the proper ticket.
After Saturday's 1 p.m. game against BYU, the Baton Rouge Red Stick Chapter of the Southeastern Alumni Association will sponsor a postgame tailgate at Alex Box Stadium.
