Unbeaten Lions Head to Southern

Southeastern looks to improve on 3-0 record

BATON ROUGE – The Southeastern Louisiana tennis team will look to protect its unbeaten record on  Wednesday, when it travels to face Southern at 1 p.m. at University Courts.

The Lions (3-0) opened the season with road victories over Louisiana Tech, Jackson State and Grambling last week. Southern (0-1) enters the match looking for its first victory of the spring after dropping a 7-0 decision to LSU in the season opener.

Southeastern has posted a combined 15-2 mark in singles play and features six players with unblemished dual match singles marks. Freshman Nastya Tokareva leads the team with a 3-0 record on the No. 2 court, while freshman Renee Villarreal and senior Isabel Brito are both 2-0 thus far this spring.

A trio of Lions – sophomore Morgane Charpenne, sophomore Adriana Castillo and freshman Sarah Kriem – each have 1-0 records this spring. Freshman Reginka Nychytailova and junior Valya Rusakova round out the Southeastern singles lineup and both are 2-1 in dual match play.

Southeastern is 4-0 in doubles play this season. Villarreal and Castillo are 2-0 as a team to lead the Lions. The pairing of Tokareva and Rusakova, as well as the team of Nychytailova and Kriem are both 1-0 in the young season.

Last season, Southern pushed the Lions to the limit before Southeastern earned a 4-3 victory in Baton Rouge. Castillo and Brito each had three-set singles victories in the win for Southeastern.

Following Wednesday's match, Southeastern will conclude its season-opening five-match road swing with a 1 p.m. match versus Alcorn State on Saturday in Lorman, Miss.
